what is the 2% diffeRence between a man and a Chimp?
Although chimps are similar to us, they are not identical. If, when DNA is being copied in a sperm or an egg, and a nucleotide is mistakenly copied wrong, the result is a mutation. If the mutation continues from generation to generation, it becomes a DNA difference—which is something that makes us different from other things (like chimpanzees and humans). The 2 percent difference can be very broadly distributed. Humans and chimps each have somewhere between 20,000 and 30,000 genes, meaning there could be a nucleotide difference in every gene, which results in our differences. So, there is a small difference in every gene we have that adds up to the 2% difference that distinguishes humans from chimpanzees. So, for a chimp to become a human a lot of things need to change. The obvious is they need to loose a lot of hair, loose their extreme strength and become significantly better swimmers. So, if they turned into us something in every single gene would need to be adjusted.
